On Wednesday, January 29, Mark Brumley, editor-in-chief of Ignatius Press, was on the show to talk about The Day is Now Far Spent, the last installment in a trilogy of books by Robert Cardinal Sarah. (The preceding books were God or Nothing and The Power of Silence). Mark talked about how the title of this third book comes from the scripture where the disciples were on the road to Emmaus and Jesus was walking with them, but they did not realize it was Jesus who was with them all along until they retired for the evening. The basic point behind the book stems from that scripture and speaks about how in some ways the Church is entering into a “dark period of the evening or night”, but we shouldn’t be afraid because our Lord is always with us, even when we don’t realize it. The book also calls for renewal within the Church, and talks about how we should lean on God in that process. The book is presented as an extended interview of Cardinal Sarah by French journalist Nicholas Diat. Together they range from the clerical abuse crisis to the deepening crisis of faith in contemporary Europe; the dangers of trans-humanism to our hope rooted in the Eucharist. Mark Brumley gives a marvelous tour of The Day Is Now Far Spent and the conversation will whet your appetite to read this important book. You can check out Ignatius Press for even more and order the book here. When choosing between values of heaven and the values of earth, always round up!
