223 Dr. Thaddeus Romansky: The American Catholic Odyssey, Pt. 1
Wednesday Jul 28, 2021
Wednesday Jul 28, 2021
On Wednesday, July 28, host Judy Comeaux spoke with RED-C’s director of education and development, Dr. Thaddeus Romansky, for the first of two conversations covering the historical experience of American Catholics. In this first installment, Dr. Romansky covered the initial arrival of English Catholics to the colonies and their subsequent settlement and later participation in the American Revolution. This period set forth a longstanding pattern for American Catholic life that would last into the twentieth century. Catholics were a minority population viewed largely with suspicion and prejudice by their Protestant neighbors because of their ethnic, creedal, and worship differences. The challenging years of the World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II began to break that mold and put American Catholics on a path to greater participation in the nation’s cultural and civic mainstream. Check back next month when Judy will have Thaddeus return to talk about how American Catholicism has weathered the chaotic years following the Second Vatican Council and the contemporaneous cultural crisis in the wider society. And remember, when choosing between the values of heaven and the values of earth, always round up.

Friday Jun 11, 2021
Friday Jun 11, 2021
On Wednesday, June 9, 2021, Gene Wilhelm spoke in the first segment with Fr. Greg Gerhart, Vocations Director for the Diocese of Austin. Fr. Greg gave us an update on priestly ordinations this summer and some of the official steps that men who think they might have a call to Holy Orders can take to discern their call properly.
In the main segment, RED-C Catholic Radio was honored to have in the studio, Fr. John McManamon, S.J., a Jesuit priest, historian, and nautical archaeologist. He began by telling us about his call to the priesthood and why he was drawn specifically to the Society of Jesus. We got to hear about his academic pursuits, including earning a Ph.D. in Renaissance history from the prestigious program at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Fr. John has taught for many years at Loyola University-Chicago and then for the last couple of decades has also been a frequent scholar-in-residence with the world-renowned nautical archaeology program at Texas A&M University and a member on a number of their excavations from the Gulf of Mexico to the eastern Mediterranean Sea. All the while, Fr. John found ways to offer his priestly ministry to the parishioners of St. Anthony in Bryan and to the students of St. Mary's Catholic Center in College Station. To hear all the details tune in and if you want to hear more from this conversation, become a monthly donor and member of our Immaculata Recurring Gift Society.
