126 James Adams on Spiritual Discipline
Monday Jul 22, 2019
Monday Jul 22, 2019
On Wednesday July 17, host Pam Marvin spoke with James Adams, theology teacher at St. Joseph Catholic High School in Bryan,Texas, about spiritual discipline. An article from Art of Manliness says that, “Spiritual disciplines are habits, practices and experiences that are designed to develop, grow and strengthen certain qualities of spirit to build the muscles of one’s character.” As human beings we are inclined to evil because of concupiscence, our inheritance of original sin. How can we expect to grow in virtue if we don’t have a certain type of discipline to overcome these effects? James and Pam talk about how discipline creates the space for God to make us better. It allows room for God to work in our hearts. Discipline may not be pleasant or fun, but it is good and it allows us to become free in a true sense, i.e. becoming more of what God created us to be. They discussed different types of spiritual disciplines along with real-life examples and experiences of them. If you want to learn more about spiritual discipline, listen to this episode! 125 Fr. Rick Thomas' Life and Ministry
Monday Jul 22, 2019
Monday Jul 22, 2019
On Wednesday July 10, host Gene Wilhelm spoke with Mary Ann Holleran and Ellen Hogarty from Our Lady's Youth Center in El Paso, Texas about Fr. Rick Thomas and his ministry. In the first part of the show, local events were discussed as well as Bishop Robert Barron's new book, Letter to a Suffering Church, where Bishop Barron confronts the sexual abuse crisis from scriptural, historical, and moral dimensions. He argues now is the time to stay and fight for the Church, not to abandon it! In the second half of the show, Gene talked with Mary Ann and Helen about Fr. Rick Thomas, a Jesuit priest who got his calling to the priesthood while training a horse! In 1964, he took over Our Lady's Youth Center, a ministry in the slums of El Paso to minister to youth gangs and the poor in the area, and ministered there for 42 years, an unusual occurrence for a Jesuit priest, who would usually get moved around regularly. Fr. Rick had a large heart for the poor and made efforts to treat them as equals, going deep into the slums across the border to Laredo one Christmas to dine with them. When the hosts realized they hadn't brought enough food, they prayed to God and watched the food begin to multiply before their eyes, a true miracle! From then on, the staff and volunteers of Our Lady’s Youth Center began going every weekend to spend time with the poor and provide for their biggest need, food. Listen to this episode to hear more about Our Lady's Youth Center's involvement in helping and caring for the poor; a snow ball effect started by Fr. Rick Thomas. 124 Timothy Gordon: Catholic Republic
Wednesday Jul 10, 2019
Wednesday Jul 10, 2019
On Wednesday, July 3rd, Deacon Mike Beauvais spoke with Timothy Gordon about his book, Catholic Republic: Why America Will Perish Without Rome. Gordon says the book was inspired by his time in studying philosophy in Rome and then returning to law school in the States. Catholic Republic is anchored in a three-pronged definition of what the author names the “Catholic Natural Law”: 1) Nature as moral and free, 2) Nature as intelligible, and 3) Nature as purpose-oriented. It is on this natural law tradition that all republics, especially the United States, are based, but according to Gordon, the country’s Protestant and Enlightenment architects either unwittingly plagiarized or deliberately distorted numerous Catholic Natural Law principles as they gave shape to the new nation in the Declaration of Independence and the federal Constitution. Dcn. Mike and Timothy also discuss why the rejection of these three principles are dangerous for the continuation of our Republic. For example, in Gordon’s eyes the doctrine of federalism is actually a misconstrued application of the Catholic principle of subsidiarity. If you are interested in the American Founding or have always wondered about the role of Catholicism in the origins of our country, you will enjoy this episode and want to read this compelling book. 123 Fr. Timothy Gallagher: A Layman's Guide to the Liturgy of the Hours
Tuesday Jun 25, 2019
Tuesday Jun 25, 2019
On Wednesday, June 19, Fr. Timothy Gallagher talked with host Pam Marvin about his book, A Layman's Guide to the Liturgy of the Hours: How the Prayers of the Church Can Change Your Life, and answered questions from callers! The Liturgy of the Hours, often called the Divine Office, means the "sacred duty" or, the "holy task." It entails periodic return to God in prayer (liturgical prayer) through the hours of the day. "Liturgical" prayer means that the prayer is something that the Church gives us - it is the same for all throughout the Church. There is morning prayer, daytime prayer, evening prayer, night prayer and a more meditative prayer called the office of readings, which can be done at any time in the day. Despite the common misconception, The Liturgy of the Hours is for everyone, not just priests, monks, and nuns; It is for everyone to pray - the common layman included! Listen to Fr. Timothy simplify and clarify the Liturgy of the Hours in a way that you can understand and appreciate. He answered questions from callers such as "how do I incorporate the liturgy of the hours into my busy life, and do they have to be prayed at the exact times?" and "do the hymns have to be sung? or can they be spoken?" and more! 122 Trent Horn: Counterfeit Christs
Tuesday Jun 18, 2019
Tuesday Jun 18, 2019
On Wednesday, June 12, host Gene Wilhelm interviewed staff apologist of Catholic Answers and catholic.com, Trent Horn, on his new book, Counterfeit Christs. Trent became Catholic in high school and has continued to have a passion for learning about the faith and being able to explain and defend it. In the first part of the show, Gene talked about the saints of the day, 108 Polish martyrs who were martyred during WWII by the Nazis: 3 bishops, 52 priests, 26 men of male religious orders, 3 seminarians, 8 religious sisters, and 9 lay people. They were beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1999. Hostess of Roundup, Judy Comeaux, gave us a surprise call live from St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican City to talk about her awesome travel experience overseas!
In the second part of the show, Trent Horn talked about the main point of Counterfeit: sharing who the real Jesus is, exposing distortions, and tackling misconceptions and partial truths about Our Lord. The chapters are set up with six groups of ideologies and under each of them are “counterfeit Christs”—false representations of Jesus that are endemic to those particular systems of thought. The groups are 1. Non-religious, 2. Atheists, 3. Other world religions, 4. Quasi-Christians, 5. Ideologues, and 6. Protestants who mistook Jesus saying that he was a prosperity preacher. Throughout the book, Trent shows how scripture and history expose these counterfeits in different ways. When asked why would someone want to read Counterfeit Christs, Trent said, “It helps them learn about who Jesus is, to get the full catechesis, knowing who He is, what he taught, what the first Christians believed about Jesus, and from there, to have intelligent answers for people who claim that the Church has misinterpreted who Jesus is.” The best place to get Trent Horn’s Counterfeit Christs is at shop.catholic.com. 121 Michael Raia: Beauty & Importance of Sacred Architecture
Tuesday Jun 18, 2019
Tuesday Jun 18, 2019
On Wednesday, June 5, Deacon Mike Beauvais spoke with Michael Raia, an architect with Studio IO about the importance and beauty of sacred architecture. In the first part of the show, Michael Bonin with the Central Texas Fellowship of Catholic Men spoke about the significance of men's fellowship and how it is valuable in building their Catholic faith. The slogan for CTFCM is "no man left behind", with the goal of making men's fellowship available to every single Catholic man in our diocese. Its purpose is to help men become better disciples of Christ through prayer, study and fellowship. There are local Catholic Men's Fellowship groups at many of the parishes around our area. If you are a man searching for Catholic men's fellowship, check your church bulletin for details! Mike is heading up a men's fellowship group at St. Mary's in College Station on Wednesday mornings at 7.
In the second half of the show, Michael Raia spoke about beauty and architecture, and all things related to our reach for God through the eyes of beauty. He has a 12-year background in design work and project management for an architectural firm. About a year ago, he started his own company, a design consultancy specializing in work for Catholic clients. Michael talked about how the beauty of architecture can draw us into the faith initially by gaining our attention and making us wonder about the origin of beauty, its application to understanding the Old Testament, its meaning and significance for our lives, and how beauty affects the Church today. We are all called to be holy, and we can have help in obtaining that holiness via active participation in the liturgy. But how does the liturgy actually encourage our sanctification and our holiness? When we talk about liturgy, we are talking about evangelization and discipleship; they should never be separated. The way of beauty is our lead into that type of discussion, it is what initially speaks to us and draws us in to desire truth and learn more about Church teachings and morality. Listen to Michael Raia discuss this beautiful perspective on the importance of beauty and architecture, and how they aid our effort to pray the Mass and live out our call to holiness. 120 Col. Mickey Addison: Follow the 5 Be's
Monday Jun 03, 2019
Monday Jun 03, 2019
On Wednesday, May 29, host Pam Marvin talked with retired Air Force colonel Mickey Addison who served our country for 30 years. Mickey has developed a leadership and excellence concept called the "5 Be's" which he has also assembled into a book of the same name.
First, be proud of who you are. Everyone has something to contribute. It is crucial to see that each person possesses human dignity because they are created in the image of God. Be proud of legitimate accomplishments and talents, but authentic pride builds people up whereas counterfeit pride is a sin and tears people down.
Be free. Authentic freedom is not being a slave to your addiction. Addiction can be a type of slavery. Take pornography, for example.
Be virtuous. This is the idea of sticking to cardinal virtues, prudence justice temperance, and fortitude.
Be balanced. A human being is more than just the mind, body, or spirit. God gave us a body as a temple and we should treat it that way. Live an integrated life that honors all three aspects. That’s is what being balanced is about.
Be courageous. That points right back to fortitude. We are called to be morally and physically courageous.
